At University of Wollongong (UoW) Campus East, inclusion isn’t just a buzzword, it’s part of everyday life. Behind the scenes, a small but passionate crew works hard to make sure residents feel supported, welcomed and part of a genuine community.
Hiring with Heart
A key part of their culture is rooted in a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, especially through meaningful employment pathways for people with a disability. Many team members have joined through inclusive employment programs, made possible by close collaboration with Disability Employment Services, partner agencies and Compass Group Australia’s DE&I team. By prioritising a person-first approach, they’ve fostered a workplace where open conversations, regular check-ins and tailored support empower everyone to thrive.

“We’ve learned to keep our empathetic boots firmly on” says Chartwells Key Account Manager Piers Ursell.
“See the person first, then support the disability when and if required. Honest conversations about strengths and development areas, even before onboarding, make a huge difference.”
This inclusive mindset has strengthened the team and made a noticeable impact on residents. Communication is more thoughtful, and the atmosphere feels warmer and more connected, something residents regularly mention in feedback.
Serving with Purpose
But the team’s focus on inclusion doesn’t stop at the workplace. Earlier this year, UoW Campus East collaborated with His Boy Elroy – a local burger bar that’s philanthropic at heart and runs several charities, including Raising the Bar Foundation and Healthier Hospitality.
“What really resonated with me was their focus on mental health in hospitality” shares Piers.

“This industry is fast-paced and demanding, and I know from my own personal struggles how challenging it can be to stay well in that space. That’s been a huge motivator for me, to not only support my own team but to also back organisations that are breaking down stigma and creating healthier pathways for hospitality workers.”
To support, the UoW Campus East team hosted a His Boy Elroy takeover – a charity event for International Burger Day. The response was incredible, with students, staff and the wider community getting behind it. Between sponsorship, donations, and burger sales, they managed to raise $4,582, all going directly to charity to support mental health programs in hospitality.
“The idea started when I was sitting in the dining room and thought, ‘We could use this space for something good” shares Piers. “To see what it became was amazing. For students, it was more than just burgers, it was a chance to connect, give back, and be part of something bigger.”
With plans to make the event annual and a continued focus on inclusive hiring, the Chartwells team at UoW Campus East is proving that small steps, taken with heart, can create lasting change.
